Our Story
About Patchwork Pathways
Patchwork Pathways was born from the lived experience of working women who know firsthand the challenges of caring for neurodivergent children while building careers. We understand the juggling act, the emotional labor, and the moments when you wonder if anyone truly gets it.
We believe that no one should walk this path alone. Our community exists to provide the support, resources, and connections that make the journey more manageable—and more meaningful. Here, you'll find people who understand, practical tools that help, and a space where you can be yourself without explanation.
Our Mission
To create a nurturing community where working women caring for neurodivergent children can find understanding, practical resources, and genuine connection—so they can thrive at work, at home, and within themselves.

Meet Bernadette Smith
Founder of Patchwork Pathways
My journey into this space didn't begin in adulthood or in formal study—it began in childhood. Growing up, I learned early what it means to navigate complexity within a family. My mother lived with Bipolar Disorder, and my father was born deaf. From them, I learned empathy at a depth far beyond my years, patience, and the understanding that communication isn't just what's spoken—it's what's understood.
As I moved into adulthood, I built a career as a professional CPA accountant, eventually stepping into the role of director at a small to medium public practice. That comes with responsibility, leadership, clients, deadlines, and high expectations—the kind that doesn't pause because life is busy at home.
At the same time, I was parenting and supporting children with a range of neurodiversities—including ASD, ADHD, dysgraphia, OCD, dyslexia, and anxiety. Anyone balancing work and parenting will understand: the mental load is relentless.
I know the "split-brain" feeling—where part of you is trying to be present in your work, and part of you is worried about what's happening at home. And I also know that support changes everything. Not perfect support—real support. The kind that helps you breathe. The kind that helps you feel seen.
Everything I share through Patchwork Pathways comes from a blend of lived experience, professional insight, and deep respect for families navigating complex realities. Because you shouldn't have to navigate neurodiversity—or mental health—in isolation.
"Support is a strength, not a weakness. You deserve a life that feels more supported, more sustainable, and more aligned with who you are."
— Bernadette Smith
The Patchwork Path
Like a patchwork quilt, your journey as a caregiver is made up of many pieces—challenges and triumphs, setbacks and breakthroughs, moments of doubt and clarity. Each piece tells a story, and together they create something beautiful and uniquely yours.

Our name reflects this truth: there is no single "right" path for families navigating neurodiversity. Your journey will wind, loop back, and sometimes surprise you. And that's okay. We're here to walk alongside you, offering support at every turn.
Neurodiversity is not a problem to be fixed—it's a different way of experiencing the world. We celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives that neurodivergent children bring to their families and communities, while providing practical support for the real challenges that caregivers face.
